Villa Julie took on the Buffalo State Bengals in this
afternoon's non-conference tilt. The two teams exchanged
leads early in the first period but the Bengals came out with the
win 15-13.
In the first period, Buffalo went up 3-0 within the first five
minutes of the game. Villa's Mandi
Carr (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill), Jamie
Jones (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie), and Cat
Connelly (Fallston, MD/Fallston) each scored a goal within
the next two minutes to tie the game 3-3. The Bengals scored
six more goals before the end of the half. The Mustangs
scored 2 more goals- one by Meghan Smith
(Stevensvile , MD /Kent Island ) and the other off of a free
position shot by Connelly. At the half, the
score was 9-5.
The Bengals came into the second period with a vengeance.
They scored an immediate three goals to give them a seven-goal lead
12-5 at 20:25. Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg
, MD /Damascus ) shut down the Bengals' scoring-run with a
free-position shot at 19:38. Buffalo scored again but that
goal was answered with goals by Kristyna Hnizda
(Manchester, MD/North Carroll) and Smith which
made the score 13-8. The Bengals grabbed another seven-goal
lead, 15-8, by scoring two more goals with 9:45 left in the
game.
Villa's defense stepped up and did not let the Bengals get near
the goal for the rest of the game. With less then five
minutes left in the game, Villa's Nikki Miller
(Glen Burnie, MD/Northeast), Jones,
Zegowitz, Ashley Cathcart
(Reisterstown, MD/Franklin), and Connelly each
scored goals to close the gap to two and make the final score
Buffalo State, 15-13.
The loss brings Villa's record to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the
CAC. They return to the field to take on local rival,
McDaniel, on Tuesday, April 3, at 4:00 pm.
