DOVER, DE - The Mustangs were narrowly defeated 1-0 at Wesley
College. The Mustangs could not spoil Wesley's homecoming weekend.
The Villa Julie Women's soccer team played with intensity but could
not finish one of their 11 shots. The Mustangs outshot Wesley 11-7
in a game that the goalkeepers produced crucial
saves and the defense of each team exceled at keeping the
attackers at bay.
After a very even first half, the Mustangs almost made the
breakthrough with only a minute left in the half. A great through
ball by senior Tonia Cristino (Lancaster,
PA/Hempfield) sent Rose Phelan (Carney,
MD/Loch Raven) through on goal with only the keeper
to beat. Phelan rounded the keeper but with a tough angle could
only hit the post. The ball was then cleared by the Wesley defence.
Wesley scored only 8 minutes into the second half when some nice
play on the right side yielded the scoring opportunity. The
game was played at a high speed and the Mustangs showed some great
passing movements. The defense held firm, limiting Wesley to only 7
shots all game, which was partly due to the leadership of freshman
Katie Amos (Baltimore, MD/Catholic).
The Mustangs will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak
when they host Gallaudet University in conference action on Tuesday
9th October at 4:30pm.
