Catholic University's Kelly Andersen put a halt
to Villa Julie's eight-game winning streak netting the game
winner at 56:01 to lift the Cardnials to a 2-1 victory over the
Mustangs.
Catholic's Elyse Bellardini scored early in the
13th minute to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Andersen's
goal made it 2-0 early in the second half. It would stand as
the game winner as Villa Julie's Tonia Cristino
(Lancaster, PA / Hempfield) ended the Catholic shutout,
receiving a cross from Kelly Townley (Baltimore,
MD / John Carroll) leading her into a breakaway that beat
a challenging Tere Rossi in the 79th
minute.
Villa clamped down during the second half limiting the hosts to
four shots on strong defensive play of Rose Phelan
(Carney, MD / Loch Raven) and Lauren Healey
(Baltimore,MD / Catholic). Catholic had peppered
Casey Brown (Barnesville, MD / Poolesville) with
11 shots in the first half. Brown recorded six
saves.
