Alex Franz

Franz returns for his seventh year as a member of the men's basketball coaching staff at Stevenson in 2020-21.  He was last on staff during the 2016-17 season.

One of the most decorated players in the history of the men's basketball program history at St. Mary's College of Maryland, Franz played in 118 career games for the Seahawks while making 112 starts and scoring 1,485 cpoints. He also grabbed 548 rebounds and made 136 three-pointers. Franz finished his career as the school's all-time leader with 587 assists and 326 steals which is also a Capital Athletic Conference record.

During his four-year career, St. Mary's had a record of 91-27, the most wins by a senior class in school history. The Seahawks went 51-13 in the CAC while winning three conference championships, including back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011 when he was one of the team's captains. They also made three appearances in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship appearances.

A three-time All-CAC First Team selection, Franz was named CAC Player of the Year as a senior in 2011 while also earning Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year honors by D3Hoops.com. In addition, he was selected to the NABC and D3Hoops.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team after averaging 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists in leading the Seahawks to a 25-6 record and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Franz led the CAC in assists and steals for the third-straight season and ranked ninth in Division III in steals at 2.9 per game. He also finished fifth in the CAC in scoring.  He was named to the CAC Silver Anniversary Team in 2014.

As a junior, Franz was an NABC All-Middle Atlantic Region Second Team and D3hoops.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team selection in 2010. He was also named to the Pride of Maryland Championship All-Tournament Team for the second-straight season. Franz finished second in the nation at 3.57 steals per game and 12th with 5.9 assists per game.

Franz was also named to the Pride of Maryland Championship All-Tournament Team as a sophomore in 2008. He led the CAC with 137 assists and 69 steals while averaging 13.3 points and 5.2 rebounds.

As a freshman, Franz was named to the NCAA All-Sectional Team and was a finalist for The V Foundation Comeback Award. He finished second on the team with 109 assists and averaged 8.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists as St. Mary's advanced to the round of 16 in the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship. He finished the season ranked third in the CAC with 1.94 steals per game and fourth in assists.

Franz is a 2007 graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School where he was a three-sport athlete, participating in basketball, cross country and soccer. On the basketball court, he averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists as a senior while leading the Crusaders to a 17-13 record and semifinal tournament appearances in both the Catholic League and MIAA A Conference. He was a first team All-MIAA, second team All-Baltimore Catholic League and second team All-Baltimore County selection. He was also selected as a Charm City All-Star.
