OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The No. 11 Stevenson field hockey team delivered a statement victory on Wednesday evening, defeating No. 2 Salisbury, 4-1, at Mustang Stadium. During the contest, the Mustangs promoted Morgan's Message and welcomed WarHawks FC to the field. With the win, Stevenson improves to 7-0 on the season.
This victory over Salisbury marks the first time in program history that the Mustangs defeated the Seagulls.
Stevenson struck first at the 10:00 mark when
Coco Wallace found the back of the cage off a feed from
Gracyn Catalano, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead after the opening quarter.
Salisbury answered at the 15:47 mark to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Mustangs regained the lead early in the second half when Catalano scored an unassisted goal at the 32:40 mark, putting Stevenson ahead 2-1.
Stevenson continued to build its lead in the fourth quarter.
Lauren Schulz scored in the 50
th minute with an assist from
Hailey Mertz to extend the advantage to 3-1. Just three minutes later,
Lainey Rogers capped the scoring with an assist from Wallace, giving the Mustangs the 4-1 victory.
Despite Salisbury outshooting the Mustangs 17-12, 9-7 overall, the Mustangs dominated with five penalty corner opportunities. Catalano and Wallace led the team with three-points apiece, as Schulz and Rogers each added two.
Jordan Vradenburgh earned another win in cage, making eight saves.
The Mustangs will prepare to face another ranked opponent, as they travel to No. 14 Stevens on Saturday. The contest is scheduled for noon.
