St. Davids, Pa. (April 4) – The Stevenson Mustangs Softball team displayed determination and offensive grit in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Eastern, putting together strong mid-game rallies in both contests. Despite falling in game one, 11-3, and game two, 13–5, both in five innings, the Mustangs continued to battle at the plate and in the circle.
Game 1:
Eastern came out strong, putting together a big first inning with four runs and adding on in the second and third to take an early 8–0 advantage. Despite the early deficit, the Mustangs continued to compete and found their breakthrough in the fourth inning.
After putting runners on base, Stevenson capitalized with a clutch extra-base hit from
Sahara Ward, who delivered a three-RBI double to center field to bring the Mustangs within five at 8–3. The rally was sparked by solid at-bats from
Emily Hamp and
Sierra Williams, who each recorded hits in the inning to set the table.
Eastern continued the pressure into the fifth inning and was able to add three runs to force the mercy at a 11-3 final score, claiming an Eagle victory.
Hamp led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while Ward drove in all three Stevenson runs.
Mykaela Getz and Williams also contributed hits as the Mustangs totaled five on the day.
In the circle,
Anna Sexton (4-5) got the start before
Alexis Kirkessner provided relief, combining to record four strikeouts against a strong Eastern lineup.
Game 2:
Stevenson wasted no time getting on the board, manufacturing a run in the opening inning as
Rebecca Maiorano reached on an error that allowed Ward to score, giving the Mustangs an early 1-0 advantage.
Eastern responded with a big first inning, but the Mustangs refused to back down. Trailing heading into the third, Stevenson delivered its strongest stretch of the game with an explosive four-run inning. Hamp sparked the rally with an RBI single, followed by
Mykaela Getz adding another run-scoring hit.
Olivia Munoz delivered the big swing of the inning, driving a two-RBI double to left field to cut the deficit to 9-5 and shift momentum in Stevenson's favor.
All though with the pressure felt again, Eastern continued to swing big they forced a second five-innings game by closing out the last two frames with four runs, 13-5.
The Mustangs showed resilience at the plate throughout the contest, tallying six hits, including multi-hit efforts from
Tessa Boswell and key contributions from Hamp, Getz, and Munoz.
In the circle,
Madison Statuto provided steady relief, working through four innings while striking out three batters and helping to slow Eastern's offensive surge after the opening frame.
Ky Vaughn (1-2) started and was given the loss after one out.
Stevenson will look to carry that momentum into its next matchup, as the Mustangs return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Hunter, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m on Owings Mills East Campus.
