ABERDEEN, Md. – The Stevenson University baseball team delivered an explosive offensive performance on Friday afternoon, defeating Notre Dame (Md.), 17–2, behind a 22-hit outing.
The Mustangs wasted no time, breaking the game open with a six-run second inning. RBI singles from Kaige Garrity and Ben Vaughan highlighted the frame, while Collin Palmieri and Shaun Rudick each added run-producing at-bats to give Stevenson an early 6–0 advantage.
Stevenson continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning, scoring twice more. Rudick drove in a run with a single to left-center before Jaylon Surell added an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 8–0.
On the mound, Chris Fortunato set the tone for Stevenson, tossing five strong innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two to earn the win. The Mustangs' bullpen combined to close out the game, limiting Notre Dame to four hits overall.
Stevenson added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before erupting again in the eighth. The Mustangs plated seven runs on eight hits in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Zach Mayza, a two-run single by AJ Viccora, and extra-base hits from Palmieri and Gavin Wagner.
Garrity led the Mustangs, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Vaughan added three hits and two RBIs. Mayza also collected three hits and drove in two runs, and Rudick finished with three hits and two RBIs. Palmieri contributed two RBIs, including an RBI triple in the eighth inning.
Notre Dame's only runs came in the seventh inning.
With the win, Stevenson improves to 5–0 on the season.
The Mustangs return to Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland, tomorrow for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
