Baseball drops two contest to Hood in opening weekend of conference play

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Stevenson dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader to Hood, 4–1, in MAC Commonwealth play and fell 9-8 in the second game.

Game 1

The Blazers struck first in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on an unearned run to grab an early 1–0 lead. Hood added two more runs in the fourth to build its advantage to 3–0 before the Mustangs answered in the bottom half of the inning. 

The Mustangs broke through in the bottom of the fourth when Jaylon Surell tripled and later scored on an RBI single from Zach Mayza. Stevenson finished with five hits and drew eight walks. 

Ben Vaughan and Collin Palmieri each added hits. On the mound, Will Heyse struck out six over 4.1 innings. Sommers Turner added three strikeouts in relief, while Colin Bull recorded the final out in the seventh.

Game 2

Stevenson erased an early three-run deficit and took a late lead, but Hood used a three-run eighth inning to edge the Mustangs, 9–8. Stevenson totaled 14 hits in the loss. 

Shaun Rudick led the Mustangs with three RBI, while Landen Eyster and Mayza each collected three hits. Stevenson grabbed a 7–6 lead in the seventh, but Hood answered in the next frame and held on despite a late Mustang push in the ninth. 

On the mound, Stevenson used multiple arms in the contest, with Jake Treasure turning in a strong relief outing by tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four. Mason Gove was charged with the loss after allowing the go-ahead runs in the eighth.

The Mustangs return to action tomorrow when the face Hood in their third match-up. The game will be held at Blandair Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
