Westminster, Md. (March 11) – The Stevenson softball team battled throughout the afternoon in a non-conference match up at McDaniel, putting together key offensive moments before falling in the season opener to the Green Terror, 14–5, in game one, before bouncing back to secure a 4–2 victory in game two.
Game 1:
McDaniel jumped out to an early advantage in the opening inning, scoring three runs to take a 3–0 lead. Stevenson responded in the second inning with timely hitting to cut into the deficit. After two runners reached base,
Olivia Munoz delivered a clutch double to right-center field that brought home both
Maria Morsa and
Sierra Williams, trimming the lead to 3–2.
The Green Terror answered with a big second inning, pushing across five runs to extend their advantage. Despite the setback, the Mustangs continued to battle at the plate and put together another scoring opportunity in the fourth inning. Stevenson strung together baserunners before
Ava Stafursky delivered a key hit that drove in three runs, bringing the Mustangs within one at 6–5 and keeping the pressure on McDaniel.
McDaniel would respond with additional runs in the fifth inning to pull away for the 14–5 decision.
Game 2:
After both teams battled through three scoreless innings, McDaniel struck first in the bottom of the fourth. A single through the left side drove in the Green Terror's first run before a sacrifice play brought home another, giving the hosts a 2–0 advantage midway through the contest.
Stevenson began its comeback in the top of the fifth inning. With runners working their way on base,
Sahara Ward delivered a clutch hit that drove in the Mustangs' first run of the afternoon to cut the deficit to 2–1.
The Mustangs broke the game open in the sixth inning. After Stevenson once again put runners in scoring position, Ward stepped up and came through in a big moment, ripping one to center field to give the Mustangs their first lead of the day and extending the advantage to 4–2.
From there,
Anna Sexton earned the win in the circle as the sophomore pitcher allowed just five hits and two earned runs while striking out three across seven innings to secure her first win of the season.
Stevenson returns to action during its Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Saturday, March 14, when the Mustangs open a two-game slate against Albion at 9 a.m.
