PITTSTON, Pa. – The Stevenson men's ice hockey team (14-6-1 overall, 13-3-1 MAC) earned a 2-0 victory over King's on Friday evening with both goals coming in the third period.
The Mustangs set the tone early in the opening period, controlling possession and generating quality chances while keeping the game scoreless. Stevenson outshot King's and earned the first power play of the night, but the Monarchs turned aside each opportunity.
The Mustangs generated multiple scoring chances throughout the second frame and killed off a King's power play midway through the period, with Louis Finnegan continuing to be sharp in net. Stevenson earned a power play of its own late in the period but was unable to break through.
Stevenson broke the scoreless tie early in the third, as Caden Smith found the back of the net coming from Aidan McDowell and Brandon Hemmer to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs continued to apply pressure and doubled the advantage on a power-play goal from Matt Yeager midway through the period coming from John Musella and Jack Karlsson.
Stevenson controlled play throughout the contest, edging the Monarchs in shots and winning 41 of 74 faceoffs. Six Mustangs recorded a point, while Finnegan made 25 saves in goal.
The Mustangs will return home on Saturday when they host Neumann University for senior day. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
