NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— The No. 17 men's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Christopher Newport 16-11on Saturday night.
Max Racich opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the contest off an assist from Darrell Curtis. The Captains answered with a five-goal run before Brennan McKneely halted the surge with a goal from Giovanni Daddario at the 2:28 mark. Racich added his second tally a minute later, and with two seconds remaining in the first quarter, Hunter Bryant scored off a feed from McKneely to trim the deficit to one.
Christopher Newport struck first in the second quarter with back-to-back goals, but Gavin Gossen stopped the run at 11:09. After the Captains added another, Racich and Gossen each found the back of the net to make it an 8-7 contest. CNU netted its ninth goal with three minutes left in the half, but Bryant responded off a setup from Curtis to send Stevenson into the break trailing 9-8.
CNU opened the third-quarter scoring before McKneely answered a minute and a half later. The Captains added their 11th goal at the 6:15 mark, but Curtis capitalized with 26 seconds remaining in the frame off a pass from Gossen to cut the deficit to 11-10 heading into the fourth.
The Captains pulled away with a five-goal run to start the final quarter. Peyton LaRocco converted a man-up opportunity with 3:17 to play, but Christopher Newport secured the 16-11 victory.
McKneely and Racich led the Mustangs with four points each, while Curtis and Gossen added three apiece. Bryant and LaRocco recorded two points each, and Daddario finished with one. Nicholas Ungerland made 12 saves in goal.
Stevenson returns to action next Saturday on the road against No. 10 Gettysburg Bullets men's lacrosse. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
