No. 17 Men’s Lacrosse drops overtime contest to Elizabethtown

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team (1-1) fell to Elizabethtown, 20-19, in overtime on Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

Elizabethtown struck first before Darrell Curtis responded with a hat trick to keep the Mustangs within striking distance. The Blue Jays used a four-goal run late in the opening quarter to take a 5-3 lead into the second.

Elizabethtown opened the second quarter with another goal to extend its advantage, but Max Racich halted the run with an unassisted tally at the 10:50 mark. The Blue Jays answered with four more goals in the period, while Brennan McKneely and Racich each found the back of the net to trim the deficit to 10-6 at halftime.

Stevenson surged in the second half, rattling off 11 straight unanswered goals to take control of the contest. Peyton LaRocco, Gavin Gossen, Hunter Bryant, Trent Mettler, Camden Deming, Alexander Wilson, Curtis, and Racich all contributed during the run. Elizabethtown responded with three consecutive goals midway through the fourth quarter to cut the Mustangs' lead to 17-13.

LaRocco and Gossen each scored with under six minutes remaining to push the advantage to 19-13, but the Blue Jays mounted a dramatic comeback, netting six straight goals to even the score at 19-19 and force overtime.

In the extra period, Elizabethtown scored the game-winner at the 2:40 mark to secure the 20-19 victory.

Gossen led Stevenson with seven points, while Racich added six and Curtis finished with five. Nik Leahan paced the defense with three caused turnovers, and Nicholas Ungerland recorded 15 saves in goal.

The Mustangs return to action on Saturday with a road matchup against No. 3 Christopher Newport. Face-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Newport News, Va.
