OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The No. 17 Stevenson men's lacrosse team (1-0) opened its season with a 10-8 victory over Muhlenberg (0-1) on Saturday night.
Muhlenberg struck first with back-to-back goals before Hunter Bryant put the Mustangs on the board at the 10:23 mark of the first quarter off a feed from Alexander Wilson. Just over a minute later, Darrell Curtis finished an assist from Gavin Gossen to even the score.
Stevenson continued its surge with under seven minutes remaining in the quarter, as Max Racich found the back of the cage off a pass from Curtis. Peyton Larocco followed with his first collegiate goal, assisted by Giovanni Daddario, and Gossen capped the run with a goal at the 1:32 mark off another helper from Curtis to give the Mustangs a 5-2 lead. Muhlenberg added a late goal, but Stevenson carried a 5-3 advantage into the second quarter.
The Mules responded with a three-goal run to close the half, taking a 6-5 lead into the break.
Brennan McKneely wasted no time in the second half, scoring less than a minute into the third quarter on an unassisted effort to tie the game. Bryant then notched his second goal of the night off a pass from Gossen to put Stevenson back in front. Gossen added another goal, this time assisted by Camden Deming, to extend the lead to 8-6. Muhlenberg scored with 11 seconds remaining in the third, trimming the deficit to 8-7 heading into the final quarter.
The Mules evened the contest at the 10:53 mark of the fourth, but Curtis and Wilson each tallied late goals to secure the 10-8 win for the Mustangs.
Curtis and Gossen each recorded four points on the night, while Wilson added three. Nicholas Ungerland earned the win in his first collegiate start, making 14 saves.
Stevenson returns to action Wednesday night against Elizabethtown College. First faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mustang Stadium.
