GRANTHAM, Pa. – Stevenson women's soccer opened Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth play with a 5-0 setback against Messiah on Saturday afternoon at Shoemaker Field. The Mustangs fall to 0-1 in conference play.
Messiah opened the scoring in the ninth minute when they found the back of the net to give the Falcons an early 1-0 advantage. The Falcons doubled the lead in the 14th minute off an assist, sending Stevenson into halftime trailing 2-0.
Goalkeeper Isabella Serano helped keep the Mustangs within striking distance throughout the opening half, recording five saves. She turned away opportunities as Messiah generated 14 first-half shots.
The Falcons added to their advantage early in the second half, with them scoring twice in a span of 29 seconds, to extend Messiah's lead to 4-0.
Stevenson's defense continued to face pressure throughout the second half, with Serano adding three more saves. Messiah capped the scoring in the 87th minute, converting a penalty kick for the final 5-0 margin.
Serano finished the afternoon with eight saves across 90 minutes in goal.
The Mustangs return to action on Tuesday, when they host Penn-State Abington on Owings Mills East Campus at 7 p.m.
