Dutchmen edge Mustangs, Benson nets shootout winner

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Stevenson men's ice hockey team (11-5-1 overall, 10-2-1 MAC) earned a 2-0 shootout victory over Lebanon Valley (5-11-2 overall, 5-7-2 MAC) after the teams skated to a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Brandon Hemmer opened the scoring at the 9:54 mark of the first period, finishing a play set up by Carson Galin and Matt Gough to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

John Musella doubled Stevenson's advantage late in the second period, netting a power-play goal at 17:28 with assists from Matt Yeager and Jack Karlsson.

Lebanon Valley cut the deficit in half with a power-play goal with under three minutes remaining in the third period, then tied the contest with an extra attacker on the ice, scoring with 19.1 seconds left to force overtime.

Neither team found the back of the net during the overtime period, but in the shootout, Caden Smith and Blake Benson each converted to secure the 2-0 shootout win for the Mustangs.

Stevenson outshot the Dutchmen, 38-35, and won 42 of 68 faceoffs. Six Mustangs recorded a point in the contest, while Ford DeLoss made 33 saves in net.

The Mustangs will next turn their attention to MAC opponent Misericordia on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Reisterstown Sportsplex.
