OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A week after coming off a loss to Gettysburg College, the Stevenson University women's volleyball team played a high-caliber level on Wednesday night in a 3-1 win over The Catholic University of America.
Set scores 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-16 in favor of the Mustangs (4-4) who snapped a two-match skid with the win.
Stevenson hit a season-high of .353 in the win (58-9-139), the best attack total since a win over Hood last season and the best in a non-conference match since defeating Lebanon Valley back on October 7, 2023. The Mustangs went 15-0-29 in the final set (.517).
Giulia Viglietta had a team-high 14 kills with just two errors on 35 total attempts (.343), while
Sydney Salazar,
Logan Burge and
Rachel Lenz each had 11 kills. All three had a combined five errors as Burge had an attack percentage of .526 (11-1-19) on the night.
Maren Zepfel hit .400 (6-0-15) with
Lillianna Hornickle hitting .444 (4-0-9).
Rachel Lenz had six aces, one off tying the school record of seven set in 2018. Burge had three.
Burge also had five total blocks, as
Declyn Tooze had 28 assists and
Courtney Foose had 21.
Defensively, Viglietta had 12 digs with Foose having nine.
In the first set, Catholic (3-6) led 20-17 before the Mustangs scratched back to tie at 21-all on a kill by Burge. Tied at 23-all, Burge and Viglietta had back-to-back kills to win the first set 25-23.
Catholic won the second set 25-22, as the Cardinals fended off a late Mustang rally.
The third set saw the Mustangs break open a deadlock at 20-all to go up 23-21. Catholic would rally to tie it at 23, before a service error followed by a Viglietta kill won the third set.
In the fourth, Stevenson led by as much as nine on its way to the win.
The Mustangs head to the Main Line on Saturday, taking on Haverford.
