Chestertown, Md. – In their season-opening match, the Stevenson Men's Soccer team competed in the Athey Cup, hosted by Washington College, taking on the Moravian Greyhounds in the first of two weekend contests. Despite a strong start, the Mustangs were edged out in the final minutes, falling 3-2.
The Mustangs struck early when
PJ Cera found an opening and delivered a pass ahead to
Gianfranco Vitella, who scored just two minutes into the match to notch Stevenson's first goal of the season. Moravian responded in the 17th minute with a goal of their own to level the score. Stevenson regained the lead ten minutes later, after another Vitella goal, carrying a 2-1 advantage into halftime.
The Greyhounds equalized again in the 65th minute, setting up a tense final stretch. Stevenson maintained offensive pressure and tightened up defensively to hold off Moravian's attack. However, with just under four minutes remaining, Moravian broke through with an assisted goal at the 86:03 mark. The Mustangs launched a last-minute offensive push, but their efforts were ultimately denied, sealing a 3-2 loss.
Stevenson will be back on Washington's College's pitch, against Roanoke, on Sunday August 30 at 11AM, for its final game in Athey Cup.
