Women’s Lacrosse takes down Widener on Senior Day

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team (11-6 Overall, 5-2 MAC Commonwealth) took down the Widener Pride (8-9 Overall, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) in the team's regular season finale, 19-11, on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the match up, the team took time to celebrate their senior class. 
 
Olivia Galati opened scoring on the day off a ball from Kara Yarusso at 11:21, as Widener replied with a goal 41 seconds later to tie the game 1-1. Sophia Murray then put away two free-position goals, followed by a goal from Katherine Friedman to make it a 4-1 game. The Pride netted their second goal with under seven minutes to play, but the Mustangs replied with four-straight goals from Kellyann Coccia, Isabelle VanEmburgh, Galati, and Yarusso to make it 8-2 after the first quarter. 
 
Yarusso started off the second quarter with a goal at 14:13, as Widener retaliated with two back-to-back goals. Yarusso and VanEmburgh then each put up another goal for the Mustangs, as Widener put away one more, but trailed Stevenson 11-5. 
 
In the third quarter, it was a back-and-forth battle for both teams. Widener netted four goals, as Stevenson put up five with the help of Alice Petersen, Yarusso, VanEmburgh, Galati and Murray to put the Mustangs up 16-9.
The Mustangs came out in the fourth quarter with another goal from VanEmburgh followed by a goal from Vivi Kaminaris assisted by Lizzy Cohen. Before the contest concluded, Widener would put up two more goals, as Yarusso added another to cap of Stevenson's 19-11 win.
 
Yarusso led the Mustangs with a six-point game with five goals and an assist, as Friedman and VanEmburgh each put up a five-point day. Galati notched four-points on the day with a hat trick and an assist, as Murray netted a hat trick. Yarusso picked up eight draw controls and four ground balls, along with Murray grabbing seven draw controls and four ground balls. Regan Torbert and Anna Johnston split time in goal on the day, as Johnston led the team with eight saves. 
 
The Mustangs will prepare to face No. 2 seeded Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament on Wednesday. The time of the contest will be announced once it is scheduled.
