GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 3 seeded Stevenson women's lacrosse team snagged a 10-8 win over the No. 2 seed, Messiah Falcons in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals on Wednesday evening.
Messiah put the first goal away in the contest a minute and a half in, as the Mustangs retaliated with a four-goal stretch with three goals from
Kara Yarusso and a goal from
Olivia Galati to slot a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Falcons fought back and put five goals away as
Sophia Murray put Stevenson's lone second quarter goal in the back of the net at 11:56. Messiah slotted a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
Kellyann Coccia started off the second half with a goal at 10:39 to tie up the contest 6-6 for the Mustangs.
Alice Petersen then followed two minutes late to put the Mustangs back in the lead with a free position goal, but the Falcons took advantage of a free-position opportunity to tie the contest 7-7. With 5:39 on the clock, Murray put an eighth goal on the board for the Mustangs, as five minutes later Galati made it a 9-7 game for Stevenson going into the final quarter.
The Falcons opened scoring in the fourth quarter with 9:47 on the clock to make it a 9-8 game, but
Isabelle VanEmburgh netted one last goal off an assist from
Erin Steinberg to cap off a huge 10-8 win for Stevenson.
Yarusso led Stevenson on attack with a four-point game with a hat trick and an assist, as Galati and Murray put away two goals and Steinberg dished out two assists. Coccia, Petersen, and VanEmburgh put one goal away in the match up. Murray led the ground balls column with five on the night.
Anna Johnston and
Regan Torbert split time in net as Torbert made four saves and Johnston made nine.
The Mustangs will prepare to travel to York, Pa. to battle the No. 1 seeded Spartans in the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Saturday. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
