Women’s Lacrosse dominates Golden Wolves, Kara Yarusso breaks all-time points record

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team (9-5 Overall, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) took down the Alvernia Golden Wolves (2-11 Overall, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) on Saturday afternoon, 16-5. During the contest, Kara Yarusso broke the all-time record for career-points previously held by Leah Warner with 273 points (168g, 105a), as of Saturday Kara Yarusso now holds the record with 274 points (215g, 59a).
 
Sophia Murray opened scoring for the Mustangs 33 seconds into the contest, followed by a goal from Isabelle VanEmburgh. Alvernia netted their first goal at the five-and-a-half-minute mark as Stevenson followed with a string of three goals. Kellyann Coccia put way a free position goal at 3:49, followed by another successful free position opportunity from Ava Treakle. With six seconds to spare, Olivia Galati found the back of the net with an assist from VanEmburgh to slot a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
To start off the second quarter, Stevenson posted another three goals. VanEmburgh put away goals at the 11:23 and 5:08 mark, as Kara Yarusso notched a goal at 4:02 to break the all-time points record. The Golden Wolves found the back of the net with about a minute and a half left in the half, but Katherine Friedman capped off a 9-2 lead for Stevenson with a free position goal. 
 
Alvernia put up the first goal of the second half with their third goal of the game at 9:14 mark, as Treakle followed three minutes later with another free position goal with six minutes left in the third quarter. The Golden Wolves closed out the third quarter with one last goal to slot a 10-4 game heading into the fourth. 
 
In the final quarter, Murray put away a free position goal for Stevenson's 11th goal of the afternoon a little over a minute in, followed by a goal from Coccia. Alvernia registered the squad's fifth goal of the contest just under eight minutes to play to slot a 12-5 game, but Stevenson replied with a four-goal string to post the 16-5 win with goals from Treakle, Murray and Galati.
 
Treakle, VanEmburg, Galati, and Murray all posted four-point afternoon, Coccia and Friedman each tallied two points. Murray led the draw controls column with seven. Anna Johnston and Regan Torbert split time in goal, as Johnston made three saves.
 
Stevenson will be back in action on Tuesday, as the squad travels to York (Pa.) to face the Spartans in MAC Commonwealth action. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
