Baseball drops two to Mary Washington in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Playing in its first day of a three-day swing in The Palmetto State, the Stevenson University baseball team was swept by The University of Mary Washington in a doubleheader on Thursday at the Ripken Complex.

Stevenson was on the short end of a 2-1 loss in game one, while the Eagles (9-4) defeated the Mustangs (2-8) 14-4 in game two.

Mary Washington 2, Stevenson 1

The Eagles – serving as the home team – scored in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Stevenson would get one back in the sixth as Kaige Garrity grounded out to shortstop scoring Nick Griffin. Griffin, Collin Palmeiri, Christopher Manco and Sam Batiancila each hit safely in the game.

Batiancila had a double, while Manco and Griffin each had triple in the contest.

Zane Stone took the loss, his first of the season. In six innings, he allowed just three hits and two runs (both unearned). He walked two and struck out two on 80 pitches.

Mary Washington 14, Stevenson 4

Mary Washington scored eight times in the top of the first inning, and built a 9-2 lead after two innings en route to the win.

Palmieri scored in the first on an error, while he singled home Sam Batiancila in the second inning.

Connor Wilkenson homered in the third to make the deficit, 9-3.

In the sixth, Liam Houghton singled home Michael McGarry.

Palmieri finished with two hits in the nightcap, while six other Mustangs collected hits.

Dhruv Indelicato got the loss, allowing two walks and eight runs in the two-thirds of an inning. Connor Fox struck out two in 1.1 innings of work, with Matt Gordon piching two innings of three hit baseball. Landon Smith threw three innings, striking out four and walking two.

Stevenson continues its trip in South Carolina by playing Rhode Island College in a doubleheader on Friday starting at 6 p.m.
