OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team (4-1) downed St. Mary's College of Maryland (0-4) on Wednesday night, 16-12, under the lights of Mustang Stadium. During the contest,
Erin Steinberg netted her 100
th combined career goal, as the graduate student put away 50 during her career at University of Mary Washington and netted her 50
th goal as a Mustang against the Seahawks.
Kellyann Coccia put the first point of the evening on the board with an unassisted goal at 12:35 in the first quarter, followed by goal from
Olivia Galati about a minute later to make it a 2-0 game. The Seahawks put up their first goal of the contest about two minutes later, but Stevenson replied with a two-goal string to make it a 4-1 game.
Kara Yarusso put Stevenson's third goal away as Steinberg put up the fourth for the Mustangs. The Seahawks retaliated with two more goals, followed by another goal from Yarusso. St. Mary's snuck one more goal away with under a minute left in the first, but the Mustangs led 5-4 heading into the second.
In the second quarter, Stevenson again put away five goals while holding the Seahawks to four.
Sophia Murray netted the first goal of the second quarter, followed by Steinberg's second goal of the evening. The Seahawks would net two, but Galati replied with two goals to make it 9-6. Before half, St. Mary's would net two more goals as Coccia put up her second goal of the evening. Stevenson held the 10-8 lead at halftime.
Maddie Kline started off the hot third quarter for the Mustangs with a goal just over two minutes in. St. Mary's put away their ninth goal of the contest away at 10:58, but Stevenson took off with a five-goal run. Yarusso started off the run with two goals followed by goals from Galati, Murray, and Steinberg. Steinberg's third quarter goal at 1:50, marked her 100
th combined career-goal.
In the fourth quarter, the Seahawks would fight back and put up three goals, while holding the Mustangs scoreless for the quarter, but despite their efforts on both sides of the ball, Stevenson secured the 16-12 win.
Yarusso led the team with a seven-point night with four goals and three assists, as first-year, Galati also put up four goals on the night. Steinberg hit her career milestone with a hat trick as Coccia registered three points with two goals and an assist. Murray contributed two goals and two draw controls, as
Isabelle VanEmburgh led the draw controls column with four.
Regan Torbert led the saves column with 12 stops in between the pipes.
The Mustangs will prepare to face RIT on Wednesday, Mar. 12 as they host their Faculty Appreciation Game. The contest is set for 3 p.m. in Mustang Stadium.
