OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team (4-2) fell to the RIT Tigers (4-1) in a tight 16-15 game in Mustang Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Kara Yarusso opened scoring with a man-up goal about a minute and a half in, followed by a goal from
Erin Steinberg. The Tigers replied with a string of four-goals, before
Sophia Murray halted them with a goal with 2:09 on the clock. Rit responded with another goal with under a minute left in the first quarter to make it a 5-3 game.
Steinberg opened the second quarter with two back-to-back goals, followed by two goals from the Tigers. Murray and Yarusso replied with a goal each to tie the game 7-7, but RIT netted one last goal to notch the 8-7 lead going into half time.
The Mustangs opened the third quarter with goals from
Isabelle VanEmburgh and Yarusso to slot a 9-8 lead, but the Tigers rallied back with two more goals to take back the lead, 11-9.
Kellyann Coccia and Steinberg each put away a goal for Stevenson, as RIT put away two more to head into the fourth quarter. The Tigers held onto their one-point lead, 12-11.
Each team put up four goals in the fourth quarter, as Yarusso, VanEmburgh, Steinberg, and Coccia all put away goals for the Mustangs. Despite the Mustangs last minute push to try to tie the contest, RIT walked with the 16-15 win.
Yarusso led with a seven-point game with four goals and three assists, as Steinberg followed with five goals on the afternoon. Coccia, VanEmburgh, and Murray all put away two goals in the contests.
Ava Treakle handed out an assist, as her and Yarusso each snagged five draw controls.
Regan Torbert and
Anna Johnston split time in goal for the Mustangs, making a combined 12 saves.
The Mustangs will prepare for their spring break trip, as they start with facing University of Rochester at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. The contest is set to begin at 5 p.m.
