Women’s Lacrosse drops first MAC Commonwealth contest of the season to No. 24 Messiah

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team (6-5 Overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth fell 17-10 to No. 24 Messiah (7-3 Overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Kara Yarusso netted the first goal of the contest off a fast break draw control win from Sophia Murray. This goal marked Yarusso's 200th goal of her career. The Falcons followed with a goal to tie the game at one-goal each, before Kellyann Coccia put Stevenson's second goal away and tallied her 100th career point with an assist from Erin Steinberg. Messiah retaliated with a four-goal run to slot a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
 
Yarusso started the second quarter in the same fashion as the first with a fast break goal off the draw. Isabelle VanEmburgh followed with a fourth goal for the Mustangs off a ball from Steinberg, as Yarusso slotted a hat trick to tie the contest 5-5. Messiah responded with a goal with 8:19 on the clock, followed by a goal from Olivia Galati assisted by Marisa Massimini to tie the game 6-6. Messiah then posted a three-goal string to slot a 9-6 lead at halftime. 
 
Messiah opened the second half with two goals before Coccia broke the Falcon's five goal run with about eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Falcons netted another goal with about two minutes left in the quarter, as Erin Steinberg ended the quarter with a goal with about a minute left on the clock to make it a 12-8 game with Messiah leading.
 
The Falcons put their thirteenth goal of the afternoon away at 14:25 in the fourth followed by a goal from Sophia Murray to make it 13-9. Messiah responded three minutes later, as Yarusso followed a minute after with her fourth goal. The Falcons finished off the win with three more goals to complete the 17-10 victory over Stevenson.
 
Yarusso led the Mustangs with a four-goal game for four points, as Steinberg tallied four points with a goal and three assists. Coccia posted two points off two goals as Galati and Murray each registered a goal and an assist. Regan Torbert and Anna Johnston both played in net for Stevenson, making 12 combined saves. 
 
The Mustangs will prepare to head up to St. Davids, Pa. to face Eastern in MAC Commonwealth play. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
