Women’s Lacrosse charges past Nazareth with 19-10 Win

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team (5-3) defeated the Nazareth Golden Flyers (3-3) 19-10 on Monday in the first game of their spring break series in Florida. 
 
Kara Yarusso netted the first goal of the match up about two and a half minutes into the first quarter. The Golden Flyers responded to tie up the game, but Erin Steinberg and Sophia Murray each posted a goal to make it a 3-1 game. With Just under five minutes to play in the first, Nazareth put away their second goal of the game, but Yarusso and Murray replied with a goal each to put Stevenson up 5-2. The Golden Flyers would put away two more goals before the end of the quarter, but the Mustangs still led 5-4.
 
Ava Treakle put up the first goal of the second quarter just over a minute in, as the Gold Flyers replied two minutes later to keep it a one goal game. Stevenson then put up a string of two goals with the help of Steinberg and Kellyann Coccia to slot an 8-5 game. Before the half would conclude, Nazareth put away two more goals, as Yarusso put the ball home once again for a hat trick on the morning. Stevenson led 9-7 at half. 
 
The Mustangs came out and put their foot on the gas with a five-goal streak in the third quarter. Treakle put her second goal of the day away off a free-position opportunity, followed but Murray's hat trick goal on another free-position shot. Olivia Galati netted Stevenson's twelfth goal of the contest at 7:05 with an assist from Treakle, and less than a minute later Murray posted her fourth goal of the game with an assist from Galati. Treakle then found the back of the net again for a hat trick off a free-position shot, as Nazareth followed and broke the Mustangs five-goal string with a goal at 2:07. Stevenson finished the third quarter leading 14-8.
 
Stevenson kept the offensive drive in the final quarter, as Galati registered a goal off a ball from Coccia less than a minute into the quarter. At 12:48, Steinberg found the back of the net again to put Stevenson's 16th goal on the board, as the Golden Flyers responded just over two minutes later with their ninth goal to make it a 16-9 contest. Steinberg posted another goal for the Mustangs just under eight minutes to go in the contest, as Nazareth put away the team's tenth goal on the day. Coccia and Steinberg would each net another goal on the day, as the Mustang defense kept Nazareth scoreless for the remainder of the contest to cap off the 19-10 win. 
 
Steinberg led the Mustangs with a seven-point day with five goals and two assists, while picking up two ground balls and causing a turnover. Murray netted four goals and dished out an assist for a five-point contest and led the team with five ground balls and caused turnovers. Yarusso picked up a five-point morning with a hat trick and two assists, as Treakle tallied four points with a hat trick and an assist. Coccia and Galati each posted two goals and an assist, as Katherine Friedman handed out an assist. Anna Johnston and Regan Torbert split time in the crease for a combined nine saves.
 
Stevenson will prepare to continue their spring break series down south and take on Wesleyan University on Wednesday. The contest is slated for 1 p.m. CST / 2 p.m. EST.
