OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team took down the No. 16 Lynchburg Hornets on Friday evening on day one of the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic.
Lynchburg opened scoring on the contest with a goal at 13:36 in the first period, as
Gavin Gossen put Stevenson on the board about five minutes later with an assist from
Grant Zick. The Hornets replied with another goal, but
Grant Zick tied it up 2-2 for the Mustangs with five minutes on the clock. Lynchburg closed out the quarter with two more goals to slot the 4-2 lead.
Gossen opened scoring of the second quarter with Stevenson's third goal of the night a little over a minute in, as
Darrell Curtis followed with a goal 30 seconds later to tie the contest up 4-4. Curtis then put the Mustangs up with a goal off a pass from
Hunter Bryant. The Hornets retaliated with a fifth goal, but
Taz Delaney put Stevenson back on top with an assist from
Gavin Gossen to make it a 6-5 game. Lynchburg again replied to tie up the contest 6-6 heading into halftime.
Delaney netted the first goal of the second half at the 12:25 mark for the Mustangs followed by a goal from
Max Racich. With nine minutes flat on the board,
Andrew Searing put Stevenson's ninth goal of the night away off a ball from Bryant during a man-up opportunity. Curtis put one more away with under three minutes left in the quarter, to slot Stevenson the 10-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Max Racich put two goals away at 13:08 and 9:57 to put the Mustangs up 12-6. Bryant followed with Stevenson's 13
th goal on the evening, as the Hornets replied and broke their 28-minute scoring drought with a goal with six minutes on the clock and again at three minutes. Zick netted one last goal with 1:44 on the clock to cap off the 14-8 win for Stevenson.
Bryant and Curtis each had a four-point night as Curtis had a hat trick with an assist and Bryant netted a goal with three assists. Delaney, Gossen, Racich and Zick had a three-point night, as Racich put away a hat trick and Delaney, Gossen and Zick netted a pair of goals and handed out an assist. Ben Aissa Esklander picked up seven ground balls on the night as
Connor Dunay followed with five.
Tyler Merchant stood in cage for the Mustangs making 13 saves on the evening.
The Mustangs prepare to take on No. 12 St. Lawrence in Day Two of the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic tomorrow.
