SALISBURY, Md. – The Stevenson women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 4 Seagulls, 6-8, on Friday evening in their season opener.
Salisbury opened scoring with a goal with 11 minutes left in the first quarter, and battled as the Stevenson defense held them until 4:42 was left on the clock before they could put their second goal away. About a minute later,
Olivia Galati put away her first career goal for Stevenson off an eight meter, and
Erin Steinberg followed with a second to tie the game 2-2. The Seagulls responded with another goal with about a minute left on the clock, but
Sophia Murray retaliated back with a goal off a ball from
Isabelle VanEmburgh to tie the contest 3-3.
Kellyann Coccia started off scoring in the second half, after she netted Stevenson's fourth goal with an assist from Steinberg. Despite the Mustangs' efforts, the Seagulls netted two more goals to register a 5-4 lead at half time.
In the third quarter, each team put away a goal. Murray put away her second goal of the contest to tie the game 5-5, and the Seagulls put up their sixth goal with only 15 seconds remaining in the quarter. Salisbury came out hot in the final quarter and snuck two goals away in the first two minutes. VanEmburgh responded with a sixth goal for the Mustangs, but despite Stevenson's efforts on both sides of the ball, Salisbury walked with the two-goal victory, 6-8.
Murray led the goal column on the evening with two, as Steinberg and VanEmburgh each tallied a two-point game with a goal and assist each, VanEmburgh also led the ground balls column with three. Coccia and Galati each notched a goal in the contest for one point.
Melina Primrose snatched three ground balls while causing two turnovers.
Regan Torbert stood strong in net for the Mustangs and made six saves in the contest.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 as they host Juniata in their home opener. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Mustang Stadium.
