Eight-Goal Fourth Quarter leads Mustangs to Season Opener win over Ohio Wesleyan

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team snagged a 19-14 win over the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops to open the squad's 2025 season on Friday evening. Max Racich led Stevenson with six goals and two assists for an eight-point game.
 
Ohio Wesleyan put away the first goal in the contest just over a minute in, before Racich responded with a man-up goal a minute later to tie up the game. With 10:33 on the clock, Andrew Searing followed with a goal off a ball from Taz Delaney, to make it a 2-1 game, and about five minutes later, Racich made it a 3-1 game with another assist from Delaney. The Battling Bishops answered with another goal under three minutes to play, but Hunter Bryant put away one more goal to make it a 4-2 game at the end of the first quarter.
 
Ohio Wesleyan came out hot in the second quarter and tied the contest 4-4 just under two minutes in. Gavin Gossen the netted an unassisted goal, followed by a man-up goal from Darrell Curtis to slot a 6-4 lead with under 12 minutes left in the half. In the next eight minutes, the Battling bishops put away two more goals to make it a 6-6 game going into halftime. 
 
In the third quarter, the Battling bishops came out with a strong offensive string to notch a 11-14 lead at the end of the quarter, but the Mustangs fired back with an eight-goal fourth quarter. Racich put away the first goal of the final quarter off a pass from Jack Scaliti, followed by another goal from Curtis, before Racich put two more goals away to put the Mustangs back in the lead with a 15-14 game. With about six minutes to play, Hunter Bryant put away the 16th goal for Stevenson, followed by two goals from Gavin Gossen. Bryant put the final goal away for the Mustangs with 1:52 left on the clock to secure the 19-14 victory.
 
Racich led the Mustangs with an eight-point evening with six goals and two assists. Scaliti registered a five-point contest, leading the squad in the assist's column with five on the evening.  Gossen followed with a four-goal game for four points, as Searing's four-point game included three goals and an assist, and Delaney handed out four assists. Bryant and Curtis each had three-point evenings with a hat trick each. Grant Zick led the ground ball column with seven while causing three turnovers, as Connor Dunay snatched up six ground balls and won 20 of 35 faceoffs. Tyler Merchant made six saves in goal. 
 
Stevenson will be back in action next Saturday, as the team travels north to face Muhlenberg. The game is slated for a noon start.
