OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University men's volleyball team, back in action after a 10-day layoff, got a good workout in as the Mustangs (6-4) swept the season series from Marymount (7-10) with a 3-2 win on Tuesday night.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-8.
Tim Flanagan, honored before the match for reaching the 1,000-kill plateau in the Mustangs' last match, made the most his night with 19 kills and three aces. Flanagan hit .381 as he made just three errors on 42 attacks.
Ryan Thenell had 11 kills with
Anthony Pezzino netting 12.
Doug Hines had 28 assists with
Connor Roth getting 18. Pezzino had 12 digs, with
JD Sarmuksnis getting ten.
Ethan Li had 22 kills for Marymount, with Esteban Jauregui netting 13.
Both teams were symmetrical in the stat sheet, with Marymount having 56 kills to the Mustangs' 53. The difference in the match was serving, as the Saints had 24 service errors to just one ace.
The Mustangs found their stride in the beginning of the fourth set, as leading 7-6, Stevenson went on an 8-0 run paced by three kills from Flanagan to go up 15-6. The same stride made an appearance in the fifth and final set, as leading again 7-6, Stevenson went on another 5-0 run to go up 12-6 and led the rest of the way.
Stevenson opens MAC play on Thursday at Widener.
