CHESTER, Pa. – The Stevenson women's basketball team fell, 58-67, to Widener in MAC Commonwealth competition on Saturday afternoon.
Janiya Ennis put up 26 points for the Mustangs in the contest.
The Pride opened scoring in the contest with seven straight points, until Ennis put up a basket with 7:55 on the clock. The Mustangs continued to battle back offensively, but the Pride put up a 12-18 lead at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Stevenson continued to fight back against the Pride, but the Mustangs were only able to put up 15 points, while the Pride netted 21 points to notch a 27-39 lead at half.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs managed to cut the gap down to 10 points with 2:20 left in the quarter, but the Pride pushed the lead up six more points to slot a 59-43-point lead at the end of the quarter.
Emori Jeselskis put up the first points of the final quarter followed by a free throw and lay up from
Nadia Ferguson to make it a 48-59 contest. With about two minutes remaining, Jeselskis put up a layup to cut Widener's lead down to nine, but despite the Mustangs' efforts, Widener walked with the 58-67 lead.
Ennis led the team with a 26-point afternoon with four rebounds and three assists and steals. Ferguson followed with a 10-point game with four rebounds and two assists.
Stephenae Lawrence and
Kalea Wynter both put up six points for Stevenson. Wynter led the rebounds column with six.
The Mustangs will return home to Owings Mills Gymnasium on Wednesday to battle the York Spartans. Stevenson will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a WHITE OUT during the game. Wear white for free admission to the contest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
