Huntingdon, Pa. (December 29) - The Stevenson Mustangs opened day one of the Doc Greene Tournament with a tightly contested match up against Franciscan University, falling by a narrow 70–66 margin on Monday afternoon in Juniata's Gymnasium.
Stevenson came out with strong energy in the opening minutes, moving the ball efficiently on offense and generating quality looks early. The Mustangs matched Franciscan possession for possession, using active defense and quick ball movement to stay within striking distance throughout the first half. Several defensive stops turned into transition opportunities, allowing Stevenson to keep the game close heading into the break with a 28-34 score.
The Mustangs continued to apply pressure in the second half, trading baskets in a back-and-forth stretch that kept the contest within one or two possessions. Stevenson showed resilience on both ends of the floor, battling on the glass and capitalizing on timely shots to prevent Franciscan from building separation. Late in the game, the Mustangs made a strong push, executing defensively and converting key baskets to close the gap.
Despite the late surge, Stevenson was unable to complete the comeback as Franciscan held on in the closing moments to secure the 70–66 decision.
Stevenson will return to action on Tuesday, December 30, when they face the loser of the Central Penn vs. Juniata match up as the Doc Greene Tournament continues.
