WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Stevenson men's ice hockey team (3-2-0, 2-1-0 MAC) powered past Misericordia (0-5-0, 0-3-0 MAC) with an 11-1 victory on Friday evening. With the win, the Mustangs set a new program record for goals in a single game, surpassing the previous mark of 10 set against Alvernia in 2022.
Stevenson opened the scoring just 2:45 into the first period, as Blake Benson put home the first goal off assists from Caden Smith and John Musella. Five minutes later, Jack Karlsson extended the lead with help from Matt Yeager and Brandon Hemmer. Just 15 seconds after that, Connor MacDonell added another tally, assisted by Hemmer. Musella then struck twice—once on the power play at 11:12 from Benson and Karlsson, and again shorthanded—to give the Mustangs a commanding 5-0 lead after the opening frame.
Benson scored his second of the night early in the second period, assisted by Jack Costabile. Misericordia responded with its lone goal on a power play at 11:52, but Musella completed his hat trick at 16:02, pushing the Stevenson advantage to 7-1 heading into the third.
The Mustangs continued to roll in the final period. Aiden Lindley and Yeager each scored within the first 10 minutes, and Greg Spitznagel followed with back-to-back unassisted goals to close out the 11-1 win.
Stevenson outshot Misericordia 46-38 and held a 50-24 edge in faceoffs. Musella led the way with a four-point outing (three goals, one assist), while Benson added two goals and two assists for his own four-point night. Karlsson finished with three points, and Spitznagel and MacDonell recorded two apiece. Smith, Lindley, and Costabile each added one point. Goaltender Ford DeLoss earned the win with 37 saves.
The Mustangs and Cougars will meet again on Saturday to complete the weekend series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre.
