Owings Mills, Md. (October 4) – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness, the Stevenson women's volleyball team hosted a Dig Pink Tri-Match on Saturday, welcoming Mary Washington and William Paterson to Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Mustangs dropped their first contest to Mary Washington in straight sets (3-0) before battling to take one set against William Paterson, ultimately falling 3-1.
Match vs Mary Washington
Set 1:
The Eagles came out strong, taking an early 10-7 lead to start the day. However, Stevenson did not back down, battling back to even the score at 14-14. A string of powerful attacks late in the set helped Mary Washington regain control and close out the opener, 25-22.
Set 2:
The second set remained tight early on until back-to-back kills from
Sydney Salazar sparked momentum for Stevenson, narrowing the gap to 19-16. Despite the late push, the Eagles' steady offensive rhythm carried them to a 25-20 win, putting them ahead 2-0 in the match.
Set 3:
After falling behind 6-3 to open the third set, Stevenson rallied to tie things up at 10-10. The set featured five more ties before a strong serving run from
Declyn Tooze lifted the Mustangs to a 20-17 advantage. However, the Eagles responded with an 8-2 run to close the set, sealing the 3-0 match victory.
Vs William Paterson
Set 1:
William Paterson's visit was a bit too strong for Stevenson at first as the Pioneers jumped out to an 8-2 lead. A quick timeout led to a Mustang surge that tied the game at 13 after a kill by
Logan Burge. Stevenson kept pace and eventually outscored the visitors 25-23 to take the opening set.
Set 2:
Once again, the Pioneers opened strong with four straight points. Stevenson battled back to come within one at 12-11, but despite a late push, the Mustangs fell 25-19 as the match evened at one set apiece.
Set 3:
The visitors carried their momentum into the third, racing to an 8-3 lead and continuing their offensive rhythm. Stevenson tried to rally late, but the deficit proved too much to overcome in a 25-16 result.
Set 4:
Stevenson opened the fourth set strong, taking an early 5-2 lead. The Mustangs held a slim edge midway through, but a late serving run shifted momentum as William Paterson surged ahead with multiple aces and kills. Despite efforts from
Sydney Salazar and
Rachel Lenz, Stevenson couldn't regain control, dropping the set 25-18 to end the match in a 3-1 loss.
Stevenson will be remaining at home on Wednesday, October 8, as they will host York (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match up.
