Salisbury, Md. (October 11) – The Stevenson women's volleyball team turned in a strong showing during a Saturday doubleheader at the Maggs Activities Center, for a Salisbury Quad-Match earning a dominate 3-1 victory over Regent before pushing Virginia Wesleyan in a hard-fought three-set match, and splitting the first day overall.
vs. Virginia Wesleyan
Set 1:
The Mustangs opened the match with great energy, jumping out to a quick lead behind early kills from
Rachel Lenz,
Maren Zepfel, and a service ace from
Declyn Tooze. Stevenson built momentum off its serving pressure, forcing the Marlins into errors to grab a 7–3 advantage.
Giulia Viglietta and Lillanna Hornickle. combined for a key block at the net to keep the Mustangs in front.
However, Virginia Wesleyan's offense found its rhythm midway through the set, capitalizing on a late 6–0 run to edge ahead. Lenz added a crucial kill to stop the run, while
Logan Burge recorded a strong swing to pull Stevenson within three, but VWU closed it out 25–20.
Set 2:
Stevenson refused to back down in the second frame, battling through multiple ties and lead changes in the most competitive set of the match. The Mustangs trailed early but surged behind Viglietta's powerful hitting—recording five kills in the set—and a clutch service ace from Lenz that helped tie the game at 21–21.
With Tooze setting efficiently and Foose adding defensive stops, the Mustangs rallied to push the Marlins to extra points. Viglietta and
Sydney Salazar each tallied key kills late, but Virginia Wesleyan narrowly escaped 28–26 despite Stevenson's relentless pressure.
Set 3:
Momentum continued to swing back and forth early in the third, as Stevenson took an early 4–2 lead behind another Tooze service ace and a pair of blocks from Burge and
Emma Shaffer. Viglietta and Lenz continued to attack aggressively, keeping the Mustangs within striking distance midway through.
Though VWU strung together a late run, Stevenson continued to battle—highlighted by a well-placed kill from
Mykiah Williams off the bench and several tough digs from
Lilly Eichelberger. Ultimately, the Marlins sealed the match with a 25–18 final, and the overall match in straight sets.
Vs. Regent
Set 1:
Stevenson wasted no time establishing control in the opening frame, storming out to a commanding 25–8 victory. Tooze sparked the charge with an incredible serving run that featured four aces and multiple assists to Burge and Lentz at the net. The Mustangs' front line dominated defensively, recording four total blocks and holding Regent to a negative hitting percentage of (-.111).
Set 2:
Regent found its rhythm in the second set, capitalizing on Mustang errors and a balanced attack to narrowly take the frame 25–23. Despite the setback, Stevenson battled closely throughout, with Burge accounting for several key kills to keep the set tight. Tooze continued to distribute well with multiple assists, while Shaffer and Salazar each found success on the outside. The Mustangs nearly erased a late deficit but fell just short as the Royals evened the match at one set apiece.
Set 3:
The Mustangs bounced back strong in the third, returning to their aggressive style both from the service line and at the net. Salazar added timely kills to extend the lead. Stevenson hit .250 in the frame and limited Regent to just .071, thanks to the defensive efforts of Terra and Eichelberger in the back row. Tooze continued to set the pace, and Burge capped off the set with several big swings to seal the 25–17 win and a 2–1 match lead.
Set 4:
Stevenson left no doubt in the fourth, opening the set on an 8-0 run behind Tooze's serving, which included four consecutive aces. The Mustangs' energy was unmatched as Henry, Shaffer, and Burge combined for clutch kills to keep the momentum rolling. The defense was equally dominant—Williams and Viglietta each contributed key blocks as Stevenson cruised to a 25–9 clincher.
Stevenson will remain on the road for their final showing in the quad match, against the host Salisbury at 11 am, on Sunday, October 12.
