OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The No. 25 Stevenson field hockey team (12-1, 1-0 MACC) defeated Widener (7-4, 0-1 MACC) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to open MAC Commonwealth play.
Lauren Tobin opened the scoring in the 10th minute with an unassisted goal to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.
Hailey Mertz extended the advantage in the 33rd minute, converting off an assist from Kailen Hibshman to make it 2-0. Widener responded with a goal in the 55th minute, but despite the Pride's late offensive push, Stevenson held strong to secure the 2-1 victory.
The Mustangs controlled the match offensively, outshooting the Pride 17-3 overall and 7-2 on goal. Mertz led the team with two shots on goal, while five other Mustangs recorded one apiece. Tobin and Mertz each tallied two points on the day, with Hibshman adding one from her assist. Goalkeeper Jordan Vradenburgh earned the win, making one save.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday in MAC Commonwealth play at Messiah. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Grantham, Pa.
