Women’s basketball drops in tight battle with Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. –  The Stevenson women's basketball team fell 71-64 to the Christopher Newport Captains on Friday evening. 
 
The Captains opened scoring 38 seconds in, before Destiny Towns put the Mustangs on the board 17 seconds later with a layup. Both teams battled to keep the first quarter close, as the Mustangs notched the 27-25 lead. In the second quarter, Stevenson kept pushing offensively, as they built a seven-point lead, heading into half time leading 41-34.
 
Christopher Newport came out for revenge in the second half, holding Stevenson to only netting eight points, while they put up 23 points to slot a 57-49 lead over the Mustangs. Stevenson attempted to fight back in the fourth quarter of the contest, but it was the Captains that grabbed the 71-64 win.
 
Emori Jeselskis led the squad with a 15-pont night while slotting four rebounds and assists. Janiya Ennis followed with nine points on the evening, with three steals and two rebounds. Erin Dixon put up eight points for the Mustangs will grabbing five rebounds, as Nadia Ferguson and Sanna Thorne registered seven points. Kalea Wynters had a strong defensive game leading Stevenson with 11 rebounds and three blocks, as Stephenae Lawrence snagged six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
 
The Mustangs will prepare to head on the road to St. Davids, Pa. on Jan. 8. The squad will face Eastern University in their MAC Commonwealth opener at 5 p.m.
