WINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's ice hockey team came on top of a 4-4 tied contest with a 2-1 shoot out win against the King's Monarchs on Saturday afternoon.
Carleigh Barwick sniped the first goal of the contest just under nine minutes in off a puck from
Emma DeMan and
Abby Smith. About five minutes later, DeMan put away the second goal for Stevenson with assists from Barwick and Smith. The Monarchs responded two minutes later with a power play goal, but Stevenson led the match heading into the second period, 2-1.
In the second period, King's put away another power play goal about 15 minutes in to tie the contest before heading into the final period of play. In the third, both teams came out with strong offensive efforts each netting two goals. Barwick put away her second goal of the afternoon about two minutes in, as the Monarchs replied with yet another power play goal 8:56 into the period. Smith instantly revolted with an unassisted goal four seconds later to snag a 4-3 lead, but Kings netted their fourth goal with under four minutes to play to make it a tied 4-4 game.
In overtime, both teams battled to head into a shootout. In shootout, after three scoreless rounds, King's fourth skater netted a goal, but Barwick saved the Mustangs to make the shootout 1-1. Each team had three more skaters step up to take their shot, and it was
Maggie Dean who put the winning goal away to put Stevenson on top.
Smith led the points column on the afternoon with four as she put away a goal and handed out three assists. Barwick sat on top of the goals column with two in the contest with an assist, as DeMan dished out two assists and netted a goal.
Olivia DeGuire stood in goal making 40 saves for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will stay home at Reisterstown Sportsplex and prepare to take on Lebanon Valley in MAC play on Friday evening. Puck drop is slated for 5 p.m.
