Football falls in home opener to Rowan, 35-16

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Rowan built a 28-7 halftime lead as Profs (1-0) spoiled the season opener for Stevenson (0-1) handing the Mustangs a 35-16 loss on Thursday night in non-conference football action.
 
The Profs held the ball for close to 40 minutes (39:56) in the game, running 81 plays in getting 411 yards.
 
Stevenson got 136 yards in the air from Landon Winterbottom who went 8-for-20 with a score, while Deion Richardson caught five passes for 161 yards and two scores.
 
Clarence Travis had 11 tackles with Bryan Kelly getting nine.
 
For Rowan, Matt Wesley threw for three scores as he went 18-for-28 for 250 yards, while running for 47 yards and another score.
 
Rowan took the lead at 7-0 with 2:20 left in the first as Wesley rushed 15 yard for a score, followed by the Profs going up 14-0 on an interception return of 26 yards by Carter Williams with 1:25 left in the first quarter.
 
The Mustangs got on the board with 11:51 left in the second as Winterbottom threw a ten-yard scoring pass to Richardson to cut the deficit to 14-7.
 
Rowan would answer back with a score at the 5:35 mark as Welsey threw a three-yard score to Luke Hoke for a 21-7 lead. The final score of the half came when Welsey threw a 27-yard pass to Michael Zarfarti with 26 seconds left in the half.
 
The Wesley to Hoke connection netted another score in the third quarter when the two got together for a 61-yard score with 11:27 left and a 35-7 lead.
 
Stevenson would score with 10:40 left in the fourth when Richardson scored on a 24-yard pass from Jordan Adams for a 35-14 deficit. The Mustangs would get a safety with 4:51 left when a punt snap sailed over the Rowan punter's head for the 35-16 final margin.
 
Stevenson heads to Lebanon Valley next Saturday.
