OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University football team got its first win of the season in big fashion as a mixture of running the football along with tough defense gave the Mustangs (1-2, 1-1 MAC) a 21-20 win over Delaware Valley (2-1, 1-1 MAC) on Saturday.
The win snapped the Aggies' 54-game Middle Atlantic Conference win streak, as Stevenson was the last team to beat Delaware Valley in conference play back in 2016.
All three phases of the game went Stevenson's way, as a special teams play with 5:13 left in the contest prevented a tie score.
Stevenson was on the right side of the time of possession, holding the ball for 36:03 while rushing for 192 yards on the afternoon.
LJ Blackwell rushed for a game-high 110 yards on 27 attempts, with
Seth Parker and
Jordan Adams also scoring on rushes. Parker rushed for 51 yards on seven attempts with Adams rushing for 27 yards on ten carries.
Adams went 12-for-15 for 112 yards and a touchdown in the air, tossing a 21-yard scoring passes to
Makhi Walker.
Deion Richardson caught four passes for 47 yards, with
Dillon Johnson catching a team-high five passes for 29 yards.
Kidduse Kebede had three tackles as part of a balanced attack, with two sacks.
Clarence Travis had a team-high five stops.
Mekhi Harvey had an interception off of a tip with three minutes left in the fourth quarter to stop a DVU drive and give Stevenson the win.
The special teams play of the game came from
Daryus Henderson, as he blocked the PAT on the Aggies final touchdown to keep Stevenson in the lead.
Delaware Valley took an early lead s Louie Barrios IV threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Nahsir Morgan with 7:57 left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 advantage. The Mustangs tied the score just six seconds into the second quarter, as Adams rushed from 2-yards out.
The Aggies then scored on its next drive as Jack Fallon scored from 7-yards out with 12:50 left to go up 14-7, with the Mustangs coming back to score on a 21-yard pass from Adams to Walker with 57 seconds left in the first half to deadlock the score at 14.
In the third quarter, Stevenson got a stop on a 4
th-and-2 as
Gavin Shields stopped Barriot IV short at the Stevenson 24 with 6:01 left. The Mustangs would take the lead for good with 7:19 left in the fourth when Parker rushed up the middle for a 16-yard score and a 21-14 lead.
Delaware Valley scored on its next possession as Rob McConnell threw a 50-yard scoring pass to Morgan, but, Brendan Hazell's PAT was blocked by Henderson.
Stevenson's next possession was ended by an interception, giving the Aggies the ball at the Mustangs' 42. However, Harvey made his interception at the Stevenson 24 with just 3:21 left.
On third-and-3, Adams was stopped on a run up the middle, but a personal foul was called giving the Mustangs a fresh set of downs and the win.
Stevenson last defeated the Aggies on October 22, 2016, with a 19-0 win at home. The Mustangs will close a two-game homestand next week, hosting Alvernia.
