OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson ran for 221 yards on the ground as the Mustangs (2-2, 2-1 MAC) headed into the bye week with a 34-20 win over Alvernia (0-4, 0-3 MAC) in football action on Saturday.
Five different Mustangs scored on the day, as Stevenson finished the day with 402 yards of total offense in the win.
Edward Emmens rushed for 113 yards on 20 touches for a score, with
Kirk Reed getting 87 yards. Emmens, Reed and
LJ Blackwell each scored a rushing touchdown.
Jordan Adams threw for 181 yards and two scores, as Dillion Johnson and
Deion Richardson each caught a score. Adams was 12-for-22.
Stevenson forced four Golden Wolves' turnovers as
Bryan Kelly had six solo tackles for the Mustangs, with
Samuel John, Jr. getting five. Kelly had a forced fumble and recovery, with
Amari Fleming-Powell getting an interception.
Gordon Hoover had two sacks on the day.
A turnover led to Stevenson's first score on the day, as Kelly forced a fumble and recovered it at the Alvernia 26-yard line. From there, Stevenson went three plays to score, with Blackwell rushing from 5-yards out with 12:02 left and a 7-0 Stevenson lead.
The Mustangs would score on its next drive, ending an eight-play, 73-yard drive in 4:24 with Emmens rushing from 10-yards out with 6:01 left and a 14-0 lead.
The defensive unit then did its part, stopping a Golden Wolves' drive at the Stevenson 4-yard line when
Clarence Travis breaking up a pass on fourth-and-goal.
In the second quarter, both teams traded interceptions, with Fleming-Powell's INT giving the Mustangs the ball at the Alvernia 48 with 10:40 left in the half. Eight plays later, Adams threw a short pass to Johnson from 14-yards out and a 21-0 lead.
At the start of the second half, Alvernia turned it over at its 42, giving Stevenson the ball. The Mustangs would score three plays later, with Reed rushing from 1-yard out and a 27-0 lead with 11:49 left.
Alvernia would score with 5:09 left in the third as Stefan Rich ran for a 2-yard score, cutting the Stevenson lead to 27-7.
After Stevenson's drive was stalled at the Golden Wolves 13-yard line, Alvernia went 87 yards in four plays, with Andrew Simmons rushing from 20-yards out with 10:29 left cutting the Stevenson lead to 27-13.
Stevenson would answer back, going 60-yards on 14-plays in 7:36, ending with a 7-yard scoring pass from Adams to Richardson and a 34-13 lead with 2:46 left. Alvernia would score one last time, as Colin Payne threw a 14-yard pass to Dachan Thompson with 1:39 left for a 34-20 Stevenson lead.
The onside kick went out of bounds, which allowed Stevenson to take possession at the Mustang 48. They then ran out the clock.
Stevenson held the ball for 37:15 in the contest.
The Mustangs have next week off, before heading to Widener on October 12.
