Field Hockey opens season with 3-1 win over Washington (Md.)

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson Field Hockey opened their 2024 campaign this evening on the East Campus against Washington College (Md.). The Mustangs maintained a lead after scoring just over one minute into the game, leading them to an eventual 3-1 triumph.

The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Lauren Schulz became the first scorer of the season one minute and 15 seconds in. Schulz converted a pair of passes from junior newcomer Hailey Mertz and graduate student Emma Gladstein off of Stevenson's first corner of the night.

Washington spent the next thirty minutes fighting to find some offense, but they were shut down by sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Vradenburgh, who made two stops in the first half.

Less than two minutes into the second half, first year Coco Wallace notched her first career goal with assistance from sophomore newcomer Shae Bennett to put the Mustangs up 2-0.

Though the Shorewomen would find some offensive luck in the third, senior Haley Palmer scored the Mustangs' insurance goal via Emma Gladstein with three minutes remaining in the contest. Palmer would also lead the Mustangs in shots with two.

Vradenburgh added three more saves to end the night with five, and the Mustangs' sixth stop was provided by sophomore Sarah Bisson with her defensive save in the first quarter.

Stevenson looks to earn the weekend sweep tomorrow with their 4 p.m. matchup against visiting Sewanee at Owings Mills East.
