STEVENSON, Md. - The second-seeded Stevenson men's tennis team overcame a two-match deficit to overtake York (Pa.) in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals by a 5-4 score.
Larry Johnson III - who was just named MAC Player of the Week for the third time this year - and
Simeon Smith picked up the lone doubles win for the Mustangs by an 8-5 score - giving them 10 wins on the year.
Garrett Warren and
Sathwik Madasi dropped their No. 2 match, 8-5, while
Honour Zan and
Dominic Duncan fell, 8-4.
Warren took his No. 5 singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, but Madasi and Duncan would drop their matches in straight sets, putting the Mustangs in a 4-2 deficit with three matches remaining.
Zan won a hard-fought second set to take his match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6, which improved his record to 10-1. Johnson overcame a one-set deficit to take his match by a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to knot the score up at 4 matches apiece. Smith would soon close out his No. 3 match in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to complete the comeback for Stevenson. The win was also the 50th of Smith's collegiate career.
Stevenson will look to win its third MAC Commonwealth title at top-seeded Messiah on Friday, May 4.
