GRANTHAM, Pa. – Messiah scored the last two goals of the contest, including one with five second left, as the Falcons defeated Stevenson 15-12 in a matchup of two playoff bound teams in women's lacrosse play on Saturday.
Stevenson needs just one win – or a Hood loss, to clinch a spot in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference playoffs.
Erin Steinberg and
Sophia Murray had four goals each, with
Bailey Krahl and
Kara Yarusso each getting a goal and an assist.
Kellyann Coccia and
Isabelle VanEmburgh each had goal in the loss.
Yarusso had six draw controls with Murray getting five, while both had two caused turnovers.
In goal,
Regan Torbert had had four saves in the first half while
Anna Johnston had three saves in the second half.
It was a back-and-forth affair with neither team taking a sizeable lead until Messiah scored three straight goals near the end of the first half to take an 8-5 halftime lead.
Stevenson battled back, scoring the next four paced by back-to-back goals from Steinberg. Her last one at 7:44 left in the third quarter gave the Mustangs a 9-8 lead. Messiah would answer with two goals to go up 10-9, but, Krahl tied the score at 10-all with a goal at the 3:08 mark.
A Messiah goal from Annalise Keitel with 8:42 left in the fourth gave the Falcons the lead for good. Stevenson would get within one two more times but could not grab the lead.
The Mustangs host Albright on Wednesday at 7, as part of Faculty Appreciation Day.
