OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson University's
Erin Steinberg scored her lone goal of the game with 16 seconds left, which came at the right time as the Mustangs (2-3) defeated the University of Rochester (2-2) 15-14 on Saturday afternoon in women's lacrosse play.
The Mustangs rallied from a two-goal deficit with 9:30 left and scored the final three goals of the game.
Kara Yarusso had six goals and two assists for Stevenson, with
Kellyann Coccia and
Isabelle VanEmburgh each scoring three each. Yarusso and VanEmburgh had two assists each in the win.
On a rainy soaked field,
Sophia Murray had 12 draw controls with
Ava Treakle getting four and Yarusso with three. Murray and
Maddie Kline each had two caused turnovers while Melina Primose and Yarusso had three ground balls each.
In goal,
Regan Torbert had three saves.
Save for the first goal of the game, Yarusso's first with 11:49 left in the first quarter, Rochester led most of the way. Trailing 13-10 at the start of the fourth quarter, Murray scored with 13:44 left on the game on an assist from
Bailey Krahl to cut the deficit to 13-11.
Coccia scored with 10:33 left on an assist from VanEmburgh to cut the Rochester lead to 13-12. After a Rochester goal at 9:30 left from Gracie Gianettino to give the Yellowjackets a 14-12 lead, Coccia scored with 6:22 left on an assist from Yarusso to make the score 14-13.
After Yarusso tied the score at 14-all at 5:34, Stevenson forced a clock violation. With 1:30 left, on an ensuing Yellowjacket position, Melina Primose forced a turnover and grabbed the ground ball. From there, Stevenson was able to set up the game-winning goal following a time out.
Stevenson heads to Florida to take on Scranton over Spring Break, with the game slated for 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Leo's.
