SAINT LEO, Fla. – Scranton outscored Stevenson 3-1 over the final 9:32 of the contest as the Royals (4-2) handed Stevenson (2-4) an 18-16 loss Wednesday morning in women's lacrosse play in the Sunshine State.
The Mustangs battled back from an early 5-1 deficit and a 9-7 deficit at intermission, taking a 15-14 lead with 9:53 left in the contest.
Ava Treakle,
Kara Yarusso,
Isabelle VanEmburgh and
Sophia Murray each had three goals, while
Erin Steinberg netted two for the Mustangs. Yarusso,
Bailey Krahl,
Kellyann Coccia and Murray all had assists on the day.
Yarusso filled up the stat sheet with 13 draw controls, four caused turnovers and five groundballs. Murray also had eight draw controls, while
Marisa Massimini had three ground balls.
In goal, Regan Tolbert made six saves.
Trailing 5-1 with 2:25 left in the opening period, Stevenson got back in it as Treakle scored with 1:48 left in the quarter followed by a goal from Steinberg with one second
left on the clock.
Coccia scored 1:26 into the second to cut the deficit to 5-4, with back-to-back goals from VanEmburgh at the 10:30 and 8:28 mark gave Stevenson a 6-5 lead.
Scranton would answer with four straight to go up 9-6, but, Murray scored a goal with 2:00 left in the first half to make the score 9-7.
Down 13-11, Yarusso, Treakle and Murray would all score to give Stevenson a 14-13 lead in the fourth.
The Mustangs will host Montclair State at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the U.S. Lacrosse Facility in Sparks, Md.
