OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University softball team opened its 2024 home slate on Sunday, by splitting a MAC Commonwealth series with Widener.
In the opener, the Pride bested the Mustangs 9-1 in five innings, while in game two, Stevenson (6-6, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) defeated Widener (5-7, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) by a 9-1 score in six innings.
Game 1: Widener 9, Stevenson 1 (5 innings)
Widener broke open a 2-1 game with four runs in the third and three in the fourth en route to the win.
Stevenson's lone run came in the second inning when
Ava Stafursky doubled to left center scoring
Danielle Mills. Stafursky finished game one with two hits, as did
McKenzie Tobler.
Grace Briggs took the loss, as she struck out one and walked two in 2.2 innings of work.
Ky Vaughn pitched 2.1 innings in relief, striking out three and walking two.
Game 2: Stevenson 9, Widener 1 (6 innings)
A four-run fourth inning propelled the Mustangs to the win, after taking a 4-1 lead after three innings.
Stevenson led 1-0 after the first when Tobler scored on a RBI single by
Rebecca Maiorano. Stafursky would score in the second on a RBI ground out by
Madi Hershey.
Stafursky would drive in two runs in the third on a single, scoring Tobler and Maiorano.
The four-run outburst in the fourth started when
Rebecca Henry singled home
Elizabeth Russo. Maiorano then reached first on an error, which scored
Maddie Bosley. After Tobler would score on a wild pitch,
Rebecca Henry came home on an error on a ball hit by Stafursky.
In the sixth,
Caylee Cliett doubled home
Mykaela Getz to end the game.
Russo finished 3-for-3, while Stafursky, Cliett and Tobler each had two hits.
Vaughn got the win, improving to 3-0. She allowed one earned run and struck out nine in six innings of work.
Stevenson is scheduled to host Mary Washington on Wednesday.
