FREDERICK, Md. – The Stevenson softball team evened its record at 5-5, but more importantly started off its MAC Commonwealth slate at 2-0 with a sweep of Hood on Monday afternoon.
In the first game, the Mustangs defeated the Blazers 10-8, while scoring in every inning but one in the nightcap, taking a 14-12 victory over Hood (4-10, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth).
The first game saw Stevenson plate five runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh after trailing 4-2 after five.
Stevenson trailed 1-0 after one inning, but took a 2-1 lead after the top of the third as
McKenzie Tobler doubled scoring
Maddie Bosley, followed by a
Rebecca Henry single that scored Tobler later in the inning.
In the sixth,
Ava Stafursky induced a bases loaded walk scoring Henry, followed by a
Madi Hershey single that scored both
Danielle Mills and
Rebecca Maiorano. Stafursky would later score on a passed ball, while Hershey would come around on a sacrifice fly by
Maddie Buher.
With the score tied at 6 after the sixth inning, Tobler homered to start the inning, followed by a two-run single from Mills that scored Maiorano and Henry.
Tobler finished with three hits, while Henry, Maiorano and Mills also packaged two hits part of a 11 in the opener.
Ky Vaughn picked up the win in relief of
Grace Briggs. Vaughn allowed four hits and two earned runs in 1.1 innings of work, while Briggs went 5.2 innings striking out one and allowing six earned runs.
In the nightcap, Stevenson plated runs in every inning but the sixth. The two teams combined for nine runs in the first inning. Stevenson started off the top of the inning with four runs, as Mills singled home Henry, followed by Stafursky driving home Mills and Maiorano. Stafursky would later score on a RBI single by
Caylee Cliett.
After Hood struck back with five runs in the bottom of the inning, Stevenson took the lead back with two in the second as Maiorano singled home Tobler and
Mykaela Getz for a 6-5 lead. Getz would give the Mustangs a 7-5 lead in the third as she scored on a wild pitch.
The lead increased to 9-5 in the fourth when Henry doubled home Tobler and Maiorano singled home Henry.
After Hood tied the score in the fourth, Tobler had a two-run single in the fifth scoring
Tessa Boswell and Getz for an 11-9 lead. Stevenson scored three runs in the seventh – which turned out to be insurance runs – as Bosley scored on a RBI single by Maiorano followed by a two-run double from Mills scoring Tobler and Maiorano.
Maiorano was 4-for-5 with four RBI in the nightcap, with Bosley, Tobler each getting three hits. Henry, Mills, Boswell and Getz each had two hits and Stevenson finished with 20 in game two.
Vaughn picked up the win in game two, going 6.2 innings in relief of
Molly Parker. Vaughn struck out three and allowed six earned runs.
Stevenson opens its home season on Saturday against Widener.
