OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson Men's Lacrosse took on No. 8 Washington and Lee University tonight in the final game of the 2024 Mustang Classic. The Mustangs would outscore the Generals in three of the four quarters, leading them to a 10-9 victory on home turf.
Washington and Lee struck first, scoring just four minutes into the game. The Mustangs would bounce back quickly with four goals before the quarter expired, starting with first year Hunter Bryant's seventh goal of the season via junior Jered Monar's second assist. Following Bryant was junior Grant Zick for his seventh point of the Classic.
First year Darrell Curtis got on the board for the Mustangs a minute later and senior Andrew Searing picked up an assist on the play. Monar scored his second goal of the season to give Stevenson a 4-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Generals were quick to respond with three goals to tie the game at four late in the second, but Zick would score his 13th goal of the season to regain the lead.
Washington and Lee scored twice to open the second half, but Curtis would capitalize on an extra-man opportunity via sophomore Max Racich to knot the game at six.Â
Junior Graeme McCrory put the Mustangs in the lead once again with his first goal of the season, followed by first year Carter Grear for his second career goal. Both goals were solo efforts.
The fourth quarter saw two Mustang goals as the Generals attempted a comeback. Graduate student Stephen Rinck scored his first goals as a Mustang, accounting for Stevenson's ninth and tenth goals of the game. Rinck's second goal, assisted by Bryant, would become the game-winner after Washington and Lee fought back for three goals, but fell short in the final seconds.
In net, graduate student Justin Scorese kept the Generals at bay, making 12 saves in the victory.Â
In front of Scorese, classmate Ryan Quinn and junior Robbie Vanderklugt caused two turnovers apiece. Senior Conor Halpin won four face-offs, collecting all four ground balls.
The win over No. 8 Washington and Lee puts the Mustangs at 3-4 heading into their next contest against No. 1 Salisbury. Stevenson's next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27th at 7 p.m. against Elizabethtown College.
