Twelfth-ranked Hornets top Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson hosted No. 12 Lynchburg tonight in their first game of the 2024 Mustang Classic. Lynchburg would get off to an early lead with ten goals in the first half, leaving the Mustangs to play catchup in the second. Despite a seven-goal second half, Stevenson ultimately fell 15-9.

Graduate defenseman Nicholas Mulvey notched his first goal of the season at the midway point of the first quarter after two Lynchburg goals. Sophomore Max Racich capitalized on a man advantage with one minute to spare in the opening quarter, citing an assist from junior Grant Zick.

After being shutout in the second quarter, the Mustangs came back strong with a productive third. First year Gavin Gossen scored his fourth goal of the season with help from junior Jered Monar to kick things off. Following Gossen were Racich again, junior Jack Scaliti, and Zick before Racich completed his hat trick. Zick assisted on Racich's second goal as well as Scaliti's. Junior Graeme McCrory was responsible for the assist on Racich's third goal, earning him his first point of the season.

The Hornets scored three quick goals to begin the fourth quarter before senior Dillon Linhardt scored on an extra man opportunity as Zick earned his fourth assist and fifth point of the night in the effort. The Mustangs' final goal was scored by senior Andrew Searing and sophomore Colin Dobbins recorded the assist.

In addition to his goal, Mulvey recorded a team-high six ground balls, followed by senior Conor Halpin with five following 12 face-off wins.

In goal, graduate student Justin Scorese made seven saves before first year Nicholas Parolin entered in relief. He made one save in his collegiate debut.

The Mustangs fall to 2-4 overall ahead of tomorrow night's contest with No. 8 Washington and Lee University. The opening face-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Mustang Stadium as the final matchup of the 2024 Mustang Classic.
