OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's basketball (6-16, 2-9) ended on top Wednesday evening with their second conference win, this one against the Hood College Blazers (3-18, 2-9) on Feb. 7. The final score was 67-52.
The Mustangs got on the board early with a layup from
Erin Dixon within the first 30 seconds. The Blazers took a temporary lead, but the Mustangs quickly tied it up on a jumper from first- year forward
Janie Smith. First-year guard
Elia Richardson matched pace with a three pointer, which gave the lead back to SU at 4:29 remaining when Dixon added two more. Junior forward
Stephenae Lawrence recovered a quick lead swap and the team gained momentum. First-year guard
Amoni Taylor sank a three, followed by a layup from sophomore forward
Tessa Boswell seconds later. First-year guard
Korai Bowen brought the Mustangs to 20 points and the quarter ended with the home team on top, 24-17.
The Mustangs found a second-quarter scoring chance at 6:13 on the clock from Lawrence. Boswell added two to bring the team near 30 points. The Mustangs widened the gap further with a three from Smith with 3:14 remaining. Dixon and Bowen found chances as the Mustangs went into the half on top 36-21.
Going into the third, SU managed points with 6:35 on the clock with a layup from Lawrence. A free throw series from Richardson brought the Mustangs to 40. Just over halfway into third-quarter play, Richardson added her second three pointer, hitting the 10-point mark. Three successful free throws ensued as the Mustangs attempted to find their next opportunity. It arrived with under three minutes remaining as Richardson added another three, and a free throw from her brought the team to 50. She added two more free throws, ending the third quarter in a 52-42 decision.
Just over a minute passed in the fourth quarter when Smith added a jumper to maintain the 10-point gap. Taylor added two to broaden the gap a minute later. Sophomore forward
Kalea Wynter added a layup with just over five minutes remaining, and another minutes later to bring the team past 60. Seconds later, she added two more points. Boswell sank a layup with just over two minutes remaining, establishing a 15-point lead. The Mustangs finished out the quarter winning the game by 15, 67-52
Richardson topped the team with 15 points, tying her career-high, and added four steals going 3/5 at the three. Boswell totaled six rebounds and a career single game-high five steals. Lawrence totaled nine rebounds, two steals, and seven points. Wynter had eight rebounds and six points.
The Mustangs compete in the final home game of the season before hitting the road as they take on the Albright College Lions, including senior day festivities for Mustang student managers, this Saturday, Feb. 10 in a 1 p.m. tipoff.
